National Mandatory Standards for Classroom Lighting Released

Recently, the “Hygiene Standard for Daylighting and Lighting in Primary and Secondary School Classrooms (GB 7793-2025)” was approved and promulgated by the state. As a mandatory national standard, it will come into formal effect on November 1, 2026. This standard focuses on protecting the vision of young people, establishing a more scientifically sound classroom lighting environment system that covers everything from daylight uniformity to limits on blue-light hazards.
China’s prevalence of myopia among children and adolescents remains persistently high, underscoring the critical importance of classroom lighting conditions for visual health. The new standard marks a significant shift from “having light available” to “having good-quality light,” introducing new indicators such as flicker control and adequate daylight access, thereby establishing stringent minimum requirements for school lighting.
